In today’s society we all have access to cameras… digital point and shoots, helgas, 35mm, cell phones, key chain cameras and more and more available the infamous DSLs.  I am sure I’ve talked before in previous posts about how I came into photography so I will skip that story… but we all know someone who is a photographer these days!  What sets aside the photographer from the PHOTOGRAPHER?  For me, the easiest explanation is what they do with the image after it’s captured.

Along side the more affordable DSLRs there are an abundance of online tutorials, groups and classes that people can take to learn how to take a good picture.  For most, this is enough. The image is creative, you’ve followed basic composition rules; the technical stuff like exposure, color, white balance etc. are all good; resizing is accomplished… you’re ready to share! AWESOME!  LOOK I’M A PHOTOGRAPHER!!  … but why doesn’t it look like so-and-so’s pictures? And the crickets chirp…

There is more to just showing up and snapping off a few frames.  Before you even get to the point of taking the pictures there is a lot of work and that goes without saying that once you’ve taken the images there is a lot of work that goes in afterwards… this would be called the “editing” phase!

Believe it or not the pictures on my blog or that you buy don’t come out of the camera looking that way!  These are all “edited”.  Now now that doesn’t mean I “photoshopped” the image (a term I despise because it implies that I manipulated the photo so much that anyone could of taken it had they had the software to do so).  Editing programs like CS3/4/5 (photoshop), Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, Picassa, Aperture etc… are all the modern day dark rooms many photographers spent countless hours in EDITING.  Because I use a DIGITAL camera I need to use a DIGITAL process to edit my images.  Make sense?  OK, good, now that’s all cleared up…

Personally my workflow involves reviewing and culling images, soft edits (aka as “proofs”), blog edits, and final edits.  I go through and cull the images – throw out the bad ones where people are mid blink, I’ve missed focus or the picture is just unpleasant.  Then I soft edit – correct exposure, color balance and white balance if needed.  Believe it or not I make mistakes… and I don’t mind making mistakes because I learn something every time I do so (and this will be the last time you ever see me admit this!!). Final edits – I go through and add my flair to the picture.  It’s a unique combination of boosts, curves and super top secret moves that give me my “style” or “brand”.  This is applied to all images so it’s consistent through the gallery.  BUT, WAIT! There’s more… My favorite edits are my blog edits.  These are usually favorite pictures from the session that have been edited a little more.  Sometimes that involves removing blemishes, or removing that photo jumper who ruined the perfect shot or doing a super creative edit with over lays or textures and sparkles and rainbows!  More often than not it’s just extra flair on top of my final edits or black and white conversions.

Depending on what type of event and  number of pictures, these edits can take a couple hours or a couple of days.  It’s a process.  The fact that it can take a couple of hours might seem quick but also throw other clients, emails, family, kids, dogs, planes, trains and automobiles… it takes a good chunk of time.  Photographers keep weird hours too.  Stay at home mothers keep even weirder hours ; )

Here are a couple of before and after edits…

Above is a good example of how just the slightest boost can take a drab straigh out of camera shot and turn it into the masterpiece I knew it was capable of with the right edit!

I have a tendency to shoot a little safe, so I shoot with my histogram as far to the left as possible. I know other photographers who “shoot to the right” but when I do I sometimes blow out highlights.  It’s very easy to blow those out and lose the little details like white flowers on white dress or the lace in the veil.  I don’t want to miss ANY details!!

Again, a shot this a little “safe” which gives it the appearance of being a little under exposed. It also looks filmy and dull straight out of camera to me, what do you think?  The middle edit is my edited version with the “Yvonne touch”… this also happens to be my “proof” because, yes, I’m that good! HAHA! I kid, I kid!  Last but not least is a creative edit I did with selective coloring.  I’m not normally a selective color girl but when I converted to black and white I thought it needed a punch!  I know the hot momma, Angela, liked it ; )

Speaking of Angela and Marc… I just heard they had their bundle of joy!!  Let’s welcome their little guy to the world!!  I’ll be photographing him very soon for his debut!!

So in preparation of the summer coming to an end and my babies getting ready to start school soon I’ve decided to take a little while off.  Here are two of my favorite pictures of the punks partaking in one of their favorite summer activities… swimming lessons!

Enjoy!

When it comes to pictures and taking pictures there are a lot of different things out there that just interested me.  As I explained last WW weddings and flash were two of the furthest things that interested me photography wise.  Macro photography might not of been on the list of run-a-way-from but one of the things that just didn’t interest  me was macro photography. That was until I met a new friend at the local smug mug (find more information on smugs HERE as it’s a whole ‘nother topic for a whole ‘nother day!).  Anyway, my new friend Michelle, talked volumes about how much she loved architectural and macro photography.  Really? Pictures of buildings and really close up things? Does you here the excitement?  But something happened, the more I listened to her talk the more I heard something… that something was the same passion and excitement I have for my pictures of people!

After a couple lengthy phone conversations and facebook msgs I decided to give it a whirl.  I rented a 100mm 2.8 macro from barrow lenses and went to work.  I surely didn’t expect to find what I found, myself lost in a world of giant tiny features!  After a few days of playing I had to do something horrible, it took every ounce of control and composure I could muster… I packages the 100mm back in the sad lonely fed-ex box and sent him home to barrow lenses.  Yes, he, was I my lens and I named him Carlos.  He was tall, dark and smooth.  Carlos paid attention to details.  Here is a collage of our times together.

This mini red blossom is the size of my thumb nail!  Even though it suffers from a little motion blur I still love the details I was able to capture in the petals and the anthers and stigma… I would like to go back and get closer to the stigma and really focus on that one day because it’s soooo tiny and weird looking!

I know the next two may not immediately have anything in common but when I was playing I wanted to see how the lens would capture different items at different f-stops.  The Bird of Paradise leaf was captured at f2.8 meaning there was a shallow depth of field (less of the object in focus except for a specific point) which created this very abstract green piece, while the nail polish was captured at f13 (the greater the depth of field bringing more of the item in focus) which looks more like a product piece.  I loved both of these pictures even though they are both very different…

This might be one of my favorite from the whole series… I’ve played with all my other lenses and have not been able to quite capture the detail I was with the 100mm here!

Even when I cropped into this the detail was still amazing!  I never knew that eye lashes were so…. gross!  The whole idea that hair grows out of  your eyelids does bother me for some reason… I don’t know why : x

My last experiment was inspired by another smuggie, who I’ll call “J”.  After 14 failed attempts at capturing a water droplet splashing into a glass of water…

.. I lucked out and got this! Simple set up of a glass of water set up on a smooth seamless blue piece of card stock, an umbrella with flash set up to the right, and my trusty side kick Emily with her water dropper telling me “now!”… “Now!”… “NOW!” and me clicking away!!  I was pleased with it : )

Over all I feel like Carlos and I’s adventures were great.  He helped me learn a lot about my self: made me venture outside my comfort zone and try new things.  Where I’m far from mastering any single aspect of this trial, I rekindled my love of photography and added new interests.

What has inspired you lately?

What Wednesday : Flash

July 29, 2010

It’s funny when inspiration strikes… You know i have to write something relevant and I don’t forecast too easily because of this.   Today, through a lucky alignment of stars, I went somewhere I’m totally not comfortable with – flash.  The kids were acting crazy forcing me to not attend previously planned events, so I embrace my hermit lifestyle a little closer and invited our lunch company home to keep me sane!  My gal pal brought her little boys over who somehow managed to tame my wild crew and they played perfectly (again perfect alignment of stars) which allowed me to practice flashing (tee hee!) with a willing and patient victim.

Flash has always intimidated me.  All the equipment, the different set ups, the bright lights… and did I mention the equipment?!  It just looks scary!  Where to put what and how to sync it all together… *shudder*  Well today, through trial and error, I think I made some head way in my new quest of flash mastering (why does that sound so weird??).

Anyway, without going off on pretty pretty princess skirt tangents, Emily quickly accepted my volun-telling orders!  She sat, listened and executed everything perfectly while I set up different flash arrangements.  I played with two flash, off camera flash, bouncing flashes, and any other one/two flash combos you might be able to think of.  With a make shift studio I think I now understand why some people fall in love with studio lighting.  The control is unbelievable!  I am so pleased with my images today that I just had to share!!

Before I do, I think this is a true testament of stepping out of your comfort zone and pushing yourself to learn something new.  Today I concurred a fear and I feel much more comfortable and empowered!!

Thank you Emily for the endless hours of torture you endured today… I’ll make sure to keep the “goofy stuff” tucked away safe and sound… or until I need some inspiration for my next what wednesday I can pull some “what not to do” poses out!

If you follow me on twitter or are a friend on FB then you surely have seen random ramblings about PSO, Photog Shootouts or just “shootouts” in general.  Sometimes I get a little carried away with them so forgive me!

So, shootouts are learning based events by photographers for photographers.  There are a super wide range of abilities at the events ranging from 10+ years to folks who just bought their first DSLR yesterday!  The great thing about the events are that what ever level you get to attend and learn something or share something to help another learn.  We usually have “pros” leading our groups (but have been known to have just knowledgeable hobbyists) and subjects can be from basic camera functions, posing and directing posing, to post processing and building a business.

The one thing that keeps bringing us all together is just a simple box with a hole.  That hole captures light.  Light in it’s purest form is nothing but magical!  I have yet to meet someone who walks away from an event and learned nothing… and that goes for the seasoned professionals too ; )

To learn more about future shootouts in San Diego make sure to join our facebook group HERE.  Be sure to check out some of our other Southern California groups and beyond at the main website HERE.  One of the beautiful things about the Photog Shootouts is that you can travel to several major cities through out the USA and attend a shootout!  Check out them out and Shoot – Learn – Laugh !

Here are a few of my favorite shots from the last San Diego Shootout at Balboa Park : Picnic ‘n’ Pictures.  This event was a picnic that focused on off camera flash, fill flash, posing and head shots featuring our dedicated attendees!  We had a blast and got some awesome pictures with our own money makers, ohh yeah! Show me the money maker!! HA! Hope to see you ’round the next event!

Love, Yvonne

Models are all photog shootout attendees and their families.  Make up by Janelle from  j.a.i. cosmetics (jaicosmetics@yahoo.com or 619.701.0934)

OK I’m just going to admit that I’m probably going to be late a lot over the summer with my WW posts!  Because I don’t schedule them out like I should (I want them to be relevant to how I’m feeling and what I’m doing and that changes so much!) it’s getting ahead of me… before I realize it’s Wed it’s already come and gone!  We’re on the summer schedule for sure ;)

Remembering back, summers used to last forever… I’m talking like MONTHS… sometimes they even felt like a YEAR!  Now, with children of my own, I’m realizing how much quicker life really passes us by.  I wish I could slow it down, freeze frame, stop, rewind and relive some of these days.  My babies are not babies any more and the summer is quickly passing us by, and this reminds me more so how much our lives are going to change with the change of the season.  This is a BIG year for us all.  We’re facing another deployment, my “baby girl” is starting her academic career as a kindergartner and my “baby boy” is going to be in pre-k.  We have a dog. I have a career that is starting. When did *I* grow up?!  Why am I so emotional over this?! HA!  This is what everyone dreams of, for the most part ;) It’s time like these I count my blessings and just try to sit back and enjoy.  Before I know it, times will have changed and we’ll be in a different season of our lives.

OK! Enough of that!!  Consider yourself warned with the late WW and I KNOW I am also late on putting up full features of shoots gone by but I am working on those.  This next weekend I have time scheduled for all those.  I have one more shoot tomorrow then it’s a week until my next wedding (which I’m super duper excited about)!

Hugs & loves, Yvonne

PS: this is my favorite picture right now, from today. If you’re friends with me on facebook sorry you’re seeing again!  It really makes me smile, from the inside out and beyond!

Yes, I’ve gone completely bonkers and today is my What Wednesday post just two days late.  It is bound to happen, right?  I swear I have a good excuse though as to why I’m late… remember my favorite childrens boutique here in Pacific Beach, Forget Me Not? Well, it’s going through a change.  The new owners have taken me on to help get their new look going and I’m so excited to present Tula Ru… !  There will be a future post on this more indepth when Casey & Damon have their grand reopening… SO EXCITED!

I’ve got a lot in store for the blog next week which will feature the full shoot from last weekends family session, a wedding at the La Valencia and a sneak peek from from Sunday’s rockin’ baby bump!  Phew!!  Love it!!

In the mean time here are a few of my favorite model helping me figure out flash, off camera flash and all sorts!  She’s already got a couple great moves in her repertiore… we’re in SO much trouble with this one in the future.

This first set is using two flashes. One directly behind to highlight the hair and one on camera directed to her.  I know it’s pretty basic but I’ve even learned from that simple set up!  Do not place the flash directly behind… I can off set it to the left or right and direct the light to her and get a better effect.  I’m also going to be moving the main flash off camera now that my triggers came in the mail!!  Woot woot! I know, I’m totally geeking out here!

This second series if my favorite. It’s soft and reminiscent of natural lighting. I’ve shot through the umbrella to distribute the light evenly from the left side and bounced the second flash from the ceiling. Perfection with nice catch lights in her eyes!  Again, with the posing… seriously?! HAHA!

OK, in an effort to not totally be consumed by The Twilight Sage : Eclipse (which I TOTALLY went to the midnight showing! Don’t judge, you wish you were there if you weren’t!!) I’m posting a few of my favorite things.

I swear, there is nothing better than french toast: it’s toast, it’s fried and if you are like me and add butter powdered sugar, it’s perfection!  I’m sure my dentist would cringe looking at this but you know she gives my kids candy… so she can’t judge.  Some of my best moments involve french toast… seriously. I remember waking up as a kid at Maw-maw’s house and eating 6 pieces in the morning!  Yes, I ate SIX slices one day!!  At basic training in the USAF the smells of french toast and pancakes filled the chow hall… it wasn’t until the third week that I ate anything but cereal (because it was quick and was the furthest point from the instructors), but when I did I  got the piece with the most powdered sugar and it was heaven.  Now, as a mummy, my kids ask for it and it makes us ALL happy : )

I’ve recently found my next favorite… grapefruit green tea sweetened with agave nectar. YUM-O!  I have to admit, I am totally in love with The Republic of Tea’s packaging.  If I change my brand again one day it may be my model!  I also like the fact that I’m fighting for a cure when I drink it… I only buy the sip for the cure editions.

If you haven’t stumbled upon this next item get to your local TJs!  Oh. Em. Gee… yes I just said that.  Eating antioxidants never tasted sooo good.  Life should be covered in dark chocolate.  How perfect would the world be if every bride and groom served these as their party favors? Seriously. My kinda people!

So just to prove these are my favorite things… I took pictures.  If I could tie them up in brown paper packages with string and kittens and what not I totally would. Have a great Wednesday!!

What Wednesday : Cameras

June 23, 2010

So this question has popped up several times over the past few weeks… What camera should I buy?  I’m honored and humbled that everyone who has asked lately respects my opinion, thank you!!

Today there are so many options for cameras it’s overwhelming!  There are different sizes (ranging from key chains to big poppa hunkers of DSLRs) and styles that offer a wide range of features (HD, panoramic, video with/out sound, 720/1080, presets and many other variables.  This isn’t even taking into consideration how many megapixels they boast!! I already want to pull my hair out thinking about it all.

Let’s start with megapixels… to break it down “Yvonne Style” (now that’s hopefully simpler than “Barney Style”!), the more megapixels you have the larger you can potentially print your images.  Think of it this way:

  • 1 megapixel and up renders a good web image.
  • 3 megapixel and up prints a 4×6 image.
  • 6 megapixel and up prints an 8×10 image.
  • 8 megapixel and up prints a 16×20 image.

My favorite chart that explained anything beyond these numbers was at Les Jones’ site.

The numbers are dots per inch of resolution. The colors represents quality of print: purple being highest and orange being the lowest.

Now, with this knowledge remember that a good sharp image can easily be blown up HUGE because it’s a good image to begin with.  The greatness of your picture will not be equal to your megapixels.  It’s not a MP contest, it’s a sensor size contest ; ) HA!

Why would a bigger sensor matter?  Well, to put is simply, the bigger the sensor the more information that can be captured (given that it’s technically correct and in focus).  Is this going to really make a difference in choosing your camera? Not really.  If you’re interested leave me some feed back and I can go into a more detailed explanation on sensors.

Okay, so now that we have a megapixels under our belt the next question, for me is, what are you going to be taking pictures of?  What type of pictures do you want to capture?  One thing that took me forever (and I mean F.O.R.E.V.E.R. – ask a couple of my friends) was why couldn’t I get those “blurry backgrounds” in my point and shoot pictures?  Well, the simple answer is that my camera was fully automatic and even though it took great pictures I couldn’t control anything.  I wanted blurry backgrounds. I wanted blurry backgrounds to highlight the object I was photographing.  My old faithful buddy just couldn’t do that.   That encouraged me to learn more about the basics and what I ultimately wanted to do with my camera… which, in turn was the deciding factor in going back to school for nursing or photography (guess which one won?)!

The third thing I suggest thinking about is size.  How compact and accessible do you want your camera to be?  Do you want to carry it with you everywhere? How important is accessibility to you?  Something compact is easier to tote and whip out anytime any place while any of the current DSLRs are usually too big to fit inside a medium purse… and no way are you fitting one of those things in a pocket!  With the DSLR you also have to take lenses into consideration.

So, is any of this helping? I feel like I’ve shared a lot but nothing!  I guess the next step is what do I have?  Well, I have them all! HAHA! I really do!  I have three DSLRs (Canon 1D, 50D and a 5D), an Olympus point and shoot (plus many dead cameras in a drawer – why do I keep them? Are they ever going to work again? NO! I can’t throw them out though because I might, one day, open one up and revive it… yeah right!), and my handy dandy camera phone.  The hubs and I bought our first digital camera after we got married to capture our lives 10 years ago (and let’s face it, it’s the way things were going and the way I take pictures the film was getting expensive to process).  I think I  might have that shoe boxed size thing around here somewhere… ha!  When we upgraded on a vacation we stuck with Olympus because we had already invested $$ in xD cards and it made the most sense.  So we’re Olympus point and shoot people, simple as that.  When I went DSLR shopping I checked out Nikon, Sony, Olympus and Canon. Canon seemed the most popular and was a little less expensive when it came down to the crunch.  It was on sale. Period. Each brand had their pros and cons and sale always wins! And to be totally transparent, a lot of my favorite photographers used Canon.

In the end ask, ask some more, do your homework and figure out what you want to do with your camera!  That will make shopping or deciding on what to look for much easier. I’m always open for help.  I may not have the answers but I will try my darnedest to find you a suitable answer, that much I promise!

Love, Yvonne

P.S. I’m always up for sharing so hit me up and leave some plog love or email love!

OK in my quest to become a better blogger I’m trying to come up with things to keep me motivated.  Hoping “Wicked Wednesday” will help keep me on track and committed to at least one post a week … hoping also that it can answer a few of those questions that you’re always wondering.  Maybe it should be “Wondering Wednesday” or “What Wednesday”??  I am liking “What” so much better… OK I’m already getting off track here with the purpose of this Wicked What Wednesday post!!

This Whatever Wednesday I’m focusing on wearing it vintage style.  I know me,I always freak out what to wear right before a shoot… and I’m BEHIND the camera! HAHA!  I can only imagine what I’m going to do when it comes time for my turn in front… hopefully I’ll be able to look back at one of these posts and go “AH-HA!” ;) To go with a theme of a super adorable couple I’m working with here’s my take on vintage.  Of course Anthropologie is the place to go when looking for something a little vintage chic, especially if you don’t have the time to hunt through racks at the buffalo exchange or other thrifts stores.  Which, if you have the time I highly suggest because lets face it, it’s just rad to find a treasure that doesn’t cost an arm and leg and the promise of the first born child! TANGENT!! Anyway, to finish the look accessories are a must: super adorable belts and hair pins and some AWESOME recycled jewelry… made from… wait for it… SPOONS!

I love finding new purposes for old items around the house and I totally fell in love with this crafty lady I found on etsy, LTmakesjewelry!  The rings and bracelet are just a couple of her designs made out of spoons.  They add that unique personalized touch to the vintage look – and think of how personalized it can get when you request a custom piece from your own silverware?! Oh my the possibilities are ENDLESS!!  I wish I was brilliant enough to have thought of this, but I’m thankful she is!  How cute would it be to use  your great grandparents silverware to make your wedding rings?! I just LOVE that idea… I wish I had some silverware that was passed down to me!!

So back on track… we’re always focusing on what the ladies should wear.  What about our studly counterparts?  They need some styling too, right?  Today that was my mission. Find something within the style of wearing it vintage and I found this studly ensemble at Warwick Designs (I know the store is located in LA but still, super cute!!). I’m sure it could easily be replicated with a little time and focus at your local thrift store.

So what’s left for this perfect vintage inspired shoot?  The cutest couple and a location!  I got locations that have the most beautiful lighting… just saying ;)
